Medicine With a Mission
In response to the shortage of physicians, Israel’s Council of Higher Education, in partnership with Carmel Medical Center and Clalit, has established the University of Haifa’s Herta and Paul Amir School of Medicine to address critical healthcare needs in northern Israel and throughout the country. The school will educate and train 100 medical students annually, focusing on expanding healthcare in underserved areas, enhancing community care, and developing specialties crucial to the region’s healthcare demands.
Fostering a strong sense of belonging through community focused clinical training, the new medical school will play a significant role in building a diverse civic society, encouraging graduates to invest in Israel’s north.
- Since October 7, the war has drastically increased the demand for trauma care, surgery, and imaging, outpacing the available doctors.
- More than 1,200 Israelis travel abroad to study medicine each year, with 17% not returning. This number is projected to double in the near future.
- Lack of access to doctors is particularly acute in minority and lower income communities in the north
Inclusive society at the core of everything
With 42% of our student body coming from low-income families, University of Haifa builds bridges and promotes understanding among individuals from diverse backgrounds.
The University will establish programs to assist minorities in early-stage entrance exams, bringing essential resources to their communities upon graduation. This will give those students who are typically underrepresented access to a top medical education.
